Courtney Miller

Principal & Lead Developer

Courtney has been developing websites for nonprofits since 2003. Her work in this area began when she moved from Atlanta to Amsterdam, began volunteering with ASCII, a free public Internet space, and became absorbed in learning about open source software and how it can be applied to the nonprofit sector. She began working with Tactical Technology Collective, was asked to partner with Marieke van Dijk and Auke Touwslager of Informationlab to build a new Drupal site for the organization, and the work of Floatleft began.

Previously, Courtney worked for IBM, implementing web sites for the IBM Intranet and Internet, and for a start-up web software company, WebTone technologies, as a Technical Analyst. Her interest in nonprofit technology services began back in 1995 when she started volunteering with the Georgia Justice Project, providing computer job skills training to their clients. She has a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Florida.

Ben S Johnson

Creative Strategist & Designer

Ben has over 20 years of experience as a multidisciplinary designer, accustomed to wearing many hats and leading projects of all types. He excels in taking a preliminary vision and making it a reality, whether that’s with the planning and design of an organizational website, establishing a new brand identity, or strategizing and then executing a wide array of deliverables for a campaign. He’s your go-to guy for all things creative.

Ben first collaborated with Floatleft circa 2010 while working as a senior designer for the iconic creative firm, Free Range Studios, then based in Berkeley, California. Free Range’s focus on storytelling for social impact and mission-driven clients was formative for Ben, as well as being immersed in the diverse culture, social activism, and grassroots community organizations that abound in the SF Bay Area. Since then, he moved with his family back to the Southeast (now living outside of Asheville, NC), founded Ben S Johnson Creative in 2014, and has continued collaborating with Courtney on numerous projects. Ben earned a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Georgia in 2000.
